Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame
I’m addicted to NPR and listen whenever I’m in the car. Today on the way to work Morning Edition aired a story about the Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame. Stories like this are why I’m addicted to NPR.
I’ve always been annoyed that athletes are given the status of demigods in American society, and that they are monetarily valued so much more than others who actually contribute to the greater good and social progress of the world.
It’s good to know that some sports legends give back to the society that elevated them to greatness. If only they would outnumber those with current rap sheets and scandals, then I might find something to cheer about.

I think this concept is totally cool and I’m giong to post about it on my blog, though I would caution against a.) assuming there are a small number of athlete who give back (I’m under the impression that more athletes give back than we are made aware of), and b.) blaming the athlete’s too much for the media and fans’ desire to make athletes into demigods.

Richard, both good points. I find it unfortunate that society has a hunger for the scandal and idolatry that pervades sports media. I know there are many more good athletes than those who have been inducted into this particular hall of fame. My last sentence should have read “If only stories about them would be told more often than we are read the raps sheets and scandals…”
Thanks for making me clarify.
