Month-long Project

Posted in Uncategorized at 10:42 pm by Char Lyn

The day before I went on vacation, the washing machine flooded our basement flooded. That was 29 March. If I get lucky, and don’t make anymore mistakes, I’ll finally have a working washing machine by 29 April.

The flooding was caused by some “inventive” plumbing done by the previous owners that was against code and just plain shoddy work (which is true of many of the “improvements” that were made before we purchased the house). After a number of steps to ensure that was the cause (such as having the cess pools pumped and snaking the pipes, we decided to re-plumb the basement ourselves. Since my husband still has a metal rod attached to his left hand (which will get removed mid-May, finally), this decision essentially meant that I would re-plumb the basement.

Sometimes I wonder if it would have been better to hire a professional plumber to do the work. But then again, I had a plumber look at the “inventive” plumbing, and he said that it was probably the best solution. That’s why we took it into our own hands. Well, most of it. Teo’s friend from work, Tony, is a professional plumber and he came over and wielded the copper pipes for us. I don’t have the right kind of torch.

One more trip to Home Depot should take care of it. I just need a longer water inlet hose for the washing machine and an adapter to connect the sink strainer to the discharge pipe. When I finish, I’ll post before and after photos.

Starting a Revolution?

Posted in Che pictures at 7:43 pm by Char Lyn

We signed Che up for infant swim classes at the local YMCA for the winter session. I don’t know what I was thinking. Between snow storms, colds that we didn’t want to make worse, and travel, we only managed to make it to 3 out of 8 classes.

At the YMCA, everyone is required to wear a swim cap, and they mean everyone. Even people with no hair, whether old men or babies, have to wear swim caps. I had to put a pleat in Che’s cap to get it to stay on. Well at last Saturday’s class, he had had enough of the swim cap. When the class was over and we were heading toward the pool exit, Che reached up and pulled his off. We were getting out, so I didn’t bother to put it back on.

The little boy behind us pulled of his swim cap, too. I didn’t think much of it until the boy’s mother said, “Look at that. You’ve started a revolution.” I looked at her and we both snickered a little. I responded by saying, “Che, your a little young to be starting revolutions!”

There are days I question my decision to use Che for a nickname. I fear that it may be to foreshadowing of his future. If he chooses to ride off on a motorcycle with his best friend after college, I don’t know if I’ll regret it or be thrilled for him. But either way, this little boy has a mind of his own.

Like Father Like Son

Posted in Che pictures at 6:51 pm by Char Lyn

Every day for work, my husband wears a pair of jeans and a polo shirt. Every single day.

We’ve had some plumbing problems which have caused us to be without a washing machine for a couple of weeks. I’ll have to go to the laundromat tomorrow and wash about 5 or 6 load of clothes. The one benefit of being without a washing machine is that I’ve seen every piece of clothing Che owns. Today we broke out a new outfit that was a gift. It’s still a little to big, but it is oh so adorable that I had to take a picture. Polo shirt and jeans…Che really is his father’s son.

Sitting in Dad’s chair.

Is that Croatian on the computer screen?

Soup Anyone?

Posted in Video at 11:46 pm by Char Lyn

Just about every new parent I’ve ever talked to is floored by the rapid rate at which their baby develops. My husband and I are no exceptions. We’ve started working with Che on using a spoon. This video is the first attempt. The video is long, so don’t feel obligated to watch it all. But if you are his Baka i Deda (grandma and grandpa in Croatian) feel free to watch it as many times as you want.

Front or Back Brained?

Posted in interesting stuff at 10:21 pm by Char Lyn

There has always been talk of being right brained or left brained.  Left brained (right handed) is associated with being analytic while right brained (left handed) is associated with creativity.

An article in today’s NYT indicates that the front of your brain can also dominate the back of your brain.

While I found the article very interesting, I’m going to continue trying to use my whole brain.  I can’t afford to let any portion of my brain slack off.

Che Is Walking!

Posted in Che pictures at 10:39 pm by Char Lyn

Yes, Che is walking. I stopped counting the number of steps that he takes, because he is a little to fast for me. While at Christine’s house with wall-to-wall carpet, he would walk through two rooms before falling to his knees. With all that space he was quite the mover. He was not so happy today when he walked a little and fell to his knees on our wood floor. I guess he had forgotten that wood is hard. Still, he is getting more and more proficient at walking and won’t have to worry about falling pretty soon. He still likes to crawl and will use either method of transportation to get where he wants to go.

This video is a couple of weeks old, but shows him not only pushing his car as he walks, but lifting it up enough to change direction. Strong kid. ;)

11-month Birthday

Posted in Che pictures at 9:38 pm by Char Lyn

For Che’s 11-month birthday, he and I were in South Carolina visiting a good friend.  (Why else would I go to South Carolina?)  Since his 11-month birthday happened to fall on April Fool’s day, Christine made a “cake” for dinner.  But this wasn’t just any cake.  It was actually the main course.

Yes, for April Fool’s day, Christine made a cake of meatloaf with mashed potatoes for frosting.  Che enjoyed the meatloaf part of the cake and thought it was great fun. Christine’s kids loved the cake and were hoping to actually fool their father when he got home from work.  The cake’s aroma was a dead giveaway, but it did look an awful lot like a carrot cake!

I’m excited for his 1-year birthday in less than a month when he actually gets to try a very small piece of real cake for the first time.  I’ve been kicking around the idea of giving him a whole cake to play with, which is a family tradition.  But, I don’t think I will.  Wasting an entire cake by letting a 1-year old make a mess of himself and it seems to be part of the over-indulgent wasteful lifestyle I have been trying to rid myself of.  I also don’t want him to get addicted to sugar and fat too early in life.  Right now he loves his sweet potatoes, carrots, and crackers.  Why change that?

A Good Little Traveler

Posted in Che pictures, car seats, travel tagged , , , , at 9:23 pm by Char Lyn

Che is a great traveler. Here he is sleeping in the Atlanta airport in front of an iPod vending machine during a recent layover. (Yes, I found the iPod vending machine tempting and fascinating.)

Keys to successful traveling with a young toddler:

  • Dress the child to be as cute as possible. Make sure the clothing changes are cute too. An adorable child will get more attention and help for both you and the child when getting on and off of planes…and getting seat assignments. It also makes strangers smile at your child and speak kindly, which can help put the child at ease.
  • If you have to travel with a car seat, wrap the long rear stabilizing strap of the car seat around the telescoping handle of a roll-aboard suitcase. This eliminates the need for a stroller and diaper bag, reducing the amount of items you have to lug through the airport. Also, make sure your car seat is clearly labeled that it is approved for aircraft. If not, you may be required to gate check it anyway.
  • Bring a long-sleeve bib with you that can be wiped down. I like the one from IKEA. This will reduce the need to change clothes while traveling. If your child is as squirmy as mine, fewer changes are a good thing.
  • Make sure you have enough diapers and wipes with you! Be sure to account for using the wipes as hand-washing for both you and the child. Also, it’s best to use alcohol-free wipes to prevent alcohol toxicity in a small child.
  • Have enough clean bottles for the length of the flight. Formula is only good for an hour, so having 2-3 bottles for a 4-hr flight will prevent having to use an airplane lavatory to rinse bottles during a flight.
  • Learn to change your baby while he is standing up. Not all planes have changing tables, and this can be a critical skill on a long flight…unless you want to lay your baby on the lid of the toilet in the lavatory (ew).
  • Find a place to let your baby move around during layovers. Just because your plane is leaving out of a gate doesn’t mean that is where you have to wait. Find an empty seating area for her to run around. Just be sure to watch the time and get back to your gate at least 20 min before scheduled take off.
  • Some find it easier to be the first one on the plane. I prefer to be one of the last, since it means less time for my son to be confined to the cramped space.
  • Hydrate, both before and during the flight. Keeping both you and the baby hydrated will keep you happier.
  • If you are comfortable letting a stranger hold you baby, go to the bathroom while on the plane. After all, no one can kidnap your child while on a standard plane and there will be lots of witnesses. This can be much easier than trying to use the bathroom in a crowded airport. Then again, if you are using the car seat strapped to a roll-aboard suitcase, you can just use a handicapped stall. After all, traveling with a child can be a real handicap.
