Thank You “Baka i Deda”
Teo’s parents returned to Croatia on Saturday. I’m a bit tired from trying to get back into the swing of things…waking up early to get Che fed and clothed before taking him to day care. Now that he is eating food, it takes a little longer to get him out the door in the mornings. Though it is nice to be alone with my husband and son at times, I will miss having “Baka i Deda” (Croatian for grandma and grandpa) around.
Che misses them too. The day they left, I printed two 8″ x 10″ photos of Baka i Deda. One is on the coffee table so Che can look at them when he is in his excersaucer. The other is on the wall between his crib and changing table. He looks at them daily and we point to them and say their names. So far, they are the only photos to which Che has paid any attention. When he is a little squirmy or agitated, we point to the photos and say their names, and Che will gaze at the pictures for a few minutes. He’ll even reach out to touch the photos, probably trying to figure out how Baka i Deda got so small and why they don’t move or blink.
We still sing our little tune of “volim Vanda wunderbar, volim Deda wunderbar.” The German “w” sounds like a “v” giving the tune a nice alliteration. Until we get to Croatia, looking at the photos and occasionally hearing them on the phone will have to be enough to help Che remember just how much he loves Baka i Deda. I, on the other hand, will clearly remember all the wonderful things they did for us during their visit, and be grateful for the kindness they showed to me and the love they poured upon my son.

April Snow?
I’ve always loved New England for its crazy weather. This winter and spring have been no exception. It didn’t snow until January, which meant no white Christmas. But, at the rate we are going we could have a white Easter! OK, so the snow on the ground this morning isn’t likely to last until Sunday, but think how easy it would be to find all those colored easter eggs on a light blanket of snow.
Is Al Gore correct about his Inconvenient Truth? Probably, but I have another theory, too. Perhaps the Earth’s magnetic poles are getting ready to flip. Won’t that be fun when all compasses start pointing south. I wonder what other weird weather and seismic phenomena will occur when the poles do flip. Don’t believe me? Check out this article from National Geographic on the change in magnetic poles. The earth is way past due for a pole flip.

What’s the Point in April Fool’s Day?
I’ve never understood the purpose of April Fool’s Day. There are enough pranksters in the world without dedicating a day in which everyone feels the need to fool their friends.
Case in point. At midnight last night, my husband’s best friend emerged from the computer room to tell me that my husband was about to spend $3000 on patio furniture. I was tired and didn’t want to move. I wasn’t even sure why I was still awake. (Oh yeah, my husband’s best friend still hadn’t left after our small dinner party.) I didn’t believe the claim, but they both insisted that Teo was going to click the “purchase” button. I heaved myself off of the couch just so they could smugly tell me “April Fools!”
Okay, so I’ve done my share of April Fools pranks. There was my freshman year of college when I called home to tell my mom I was getting married. (She should have known better. She should have realized that if was really going to get married, I would have just shown up married. Oh, wait, I did that to her about 20 years later, but not on April Fools day. It was Christmas) My sophomore year, I sent out wedding announcements for a guy with whom I had been having a prank war. There was a year where I turned all the items in the kitchen cabinet upside down on a slightly OCD roommate.
So I guess I have a history of enjoying April Fools Day. Perhaps I’m just getting old. Either that, or pregnancy has sapped all the prankster out of me. Hmm. Teo might need to watch out for next year.
Update: Even Google can’t help itself. See it’s April Fools page here.

Random Notes of Month 8
It is always funny and somewhat amazing when I see my abdomen move on its own. This YouTube video of twin fetuses moving to the music of Jaws isn’t me, but it’s worth watching and what I feel like sometimes!
Another funny thing that started happening during my 8th month of pregnancy is the shape of my abdomen when I try to sit-up after laying down. (Note the word “try.” I’m not always able to do this.) As I contract my abdominal muscles, my entire belly becomes cone shaped. It looks something like a volcano with my belly button as the crater. It is really quite amusing.
That said, I’m going to hang with some girlfriends this afternoon at Harvard Square. Once this baby comes, it will be a long time before I’m able to do this again, so I need to take advantage of the first weekend of spring.

The Things I Do for Love
My husband and I are sitting side by side at our computer terminals, like we do about 30% of the time we are home together and awake. He constantly bugs me to turn on ICQ so he can send me links without having to go into his email. (I wish he would just get share2me and send it to my IM, but he’s stubborn. I mean, who uses ICQ anymore?)
Anyway, this morning, he wanted me to take the NerdTest. I did because I love him, and because he wouldn’t give me any peace until I did. I’m happy to say that I’m only slightly nerdy.
My husband’s score was 91, making him a supreme nerd. No surprises there. Probably one of the reasons I love him.
